After an awkward, intimidating meeting with the council, during which Zoe was forced to explain how she had managed to land in the middle of a murder investigation, Zoe was grateful to make it back to the mortal world in one piece. She sat in the back of the shop, reflecting on the day.

“That wasn’t so bad,” Zoe stated after a long silence.

“It was.” Snow shook her head. “It was so bad. You need to take Chloe’s advice and leave the detective work to the detectives.”

“Yeah,” Zoe sighed, “maybe so.”

“Was she right about the detective?” Snow asked, curiosity getting the better of her.

“Oh that.” Zoe shook her head. “No. We talked the other day but that was just Chloe blowing things out of proportion, you know how she is.”

Snow was about to answer when Zoe suddenly sat up.

“Look out there!” Zoe pointed to the dark street outside the shop, “Is that Clyde Jensen?”

“Could be.” Snow joined her looking out. “But that’s not your problem anymore. Remember?”

“Right,” Zoe dismissed her without really listening to what Snow was saying. “Wait here for a minute.”

Snow rolled her eyes but knew there was no stopping Zoe.

Zoe quietly snuck out the side door of the shop and followed Clyde at a distance down the street. It was difficult trying to look casual and also not be spotted, but luckily for Zoe Clyde didn’t turn around once.

Eventually, he walked up to Todd’s shop. Then, glancing over his shoulder--forcing Zoe to duck behind a tree to avoid being seen--he walked in the door.

What’s he doing? Zoe wondered. There’s no way he’s supposed to be in there.

Zoe shifted her position behind the tree to see better. He exited the shop after a few minutes and took off back down the road.

Zoe considered following him, but she remembered Chloe’s advice, and her own decision not to investigate further. Dutifully, she headed back to her own shop.

But she couldn’t help the way the curiosity burned at her.

What had Clyde been doing in there? And were the police ever going to look into him as a serious suspect?

Maybe Zoe needed to keep digging, after all.
